SpikyOrange has been struggling with its identity, to the point that it was wearing at minimum two hats, one for SpikyOrange and one for the BitBanter podcast.  From this day forwards, this site is exclusively for SpikyOrange content.

The SpikyOrange site will contain…

  • articles – sourced either from myself or partners (such as Manning)
  • blogs – my own personal experiences in the software development world
  • screencasts (videos) – to help teach others about software development
  • details about my own products – well, why not try and make a little money along the way?!

Please follow SocialSpeakers progress via twitter @MySocialSpeaker or drop us an email at Rob@SpikyOrange.co.uk if you have any suggestions to help us develop SocialSpeaker further.

My hope is that through my experiences (through my employment and my own products) that I can provide you with quality materials, to help you write your own software!
I have been in the software development industry for over twenty years, so the content will cover…
  • Java – The language that I have spent most of my time developing with, I was self-taught initially, but over the years I would consider myself pretty strong.
  • C# / .NET – I believed that Microsoft could not possibly compete with Java, I had a very blinkered view – I became a Java advocate and believed that Microsoft was evil.  I was wrong.  Over the last couple of years I have been shocked about how mature C# and .NET is, it offers an awful lot.  I have to say that right now I am enjoying .NET more than what’s on offer from the Java frameworks.
  • Objective-C / Cocoa – Who couldn’t refuse learning a little iPhone development, huh? In fact, my first ‘Hello World’ application became a little too big for its boots, so I decided to release it on the App Store (see the SocialSpeaker app).
  • Android – Whilst I dislike Android in comparison to Apples iOS devices, I feel that the stance that Apple takes offends many consumers and developers, so I am watching this space with a lot of interest, but, with so many variants to cater for, I can’t help but think it’s not for me!
I look forward to hearing from the community, it’s my main reason for doing this, so please leave comments throughout the site to share with other developers, or, if you are too shy, drop me an email at Rob@SpikyOrange.co.uk.

    Hi Alan,

As I was travelling to London from Hastings daily, with an original plan of this lasting one month, we all decided on taking a 4 week hiatus, with the view to review how we all felt afterwards.

Unfortunately, I think we all enjoyed the reclaimed time to work on our individual projects.

My personal plan is to learn much more enterprise grade software, then as I go along I want to share my experiences through my new blog, screencasts and potentially a new podcast. This all depends on how well that I can balance everything. Spending so much time on the train does mean that I have a couple of hours a day for coding, this should translate to useful materials here.

I very much enjoyed creating and editing the podcast, I met a couple of interesting people through it and was pleased when our number of listeners stabilised, offering a level of verification that what we were doing was entertaining.

Maybe I will start another podcast in say, 40-45 days? :)

Thanks for listening to BitBanter, I’d love to hear any feedback you have!

    Regards
    Rob

      Hi Rob,

Completely understand, I was wondering how you guys could fit it all in TBH.

I really enjoyed the podcast, and it encouraged me to start playing with some obj-c.

      Cheers for the info,
      Alan

Have you considered about putting some social bookmarking buttons to these blog posts. At least for twitter.

      Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the idea – it was on the original blog but I hadn’t really thought about it after changing over to WordPress. Now I have added the ‘AddThis’ plugin, so you can now share easily.
